Home Brew Horrors : The Undead Cultist of Kavagar

April 27, 2018

"The skeletal figure that stalks towards you is missing most of its flesh and internal organs. You can see weaving through the bleached bone a thin purple tube worm-like creature that wraps around the animated corpse like ivy over a decomposing tree. More unsettling is the fact that this purplish worm that snakes through the skeletal form wriggles and pulses with a life of its own. The skeletal figure locks its hollow eyes on you and opens its jaw as a purple snake-like organ slides out and sways side to side like a viper preparing to strike.

To a seasoned adventurer this creature in many ways resembles the Mohrg, but something about the violet beast coiled about the bones before you seems different. You don't have time to ponder it long because the creature rushes towards you. Roll initiative..."

The Undead Cultists of Kavagar were created using profane magics by the Rakshasa Warlock Charis during his occupation of the Temple of Stone Dawn. He found that while his abilities to manipulate the minds of the Serpent Folk monks who inhabited the temple were more than adequate, their lifespans relative to his were incredibly short. Rather than have to retrain new thralls every 40 years or so, or send out raiding parties to kidnap or recruit new thralls for his various experiments in bringing about the birth and rise of the plague dragon Kavagar, he found that by manipulating the undead organs of a Mohrg, he was able to create a parasitic tapeworm of negative energy that he was then able to easily pass on to all of those he held in his thrall.

Although the living tissue of Charis' thralls would rot away from the parasitic organism eating their very life force, they would continue to function as the worm grew and coiled through their bodies. Charis, finding his mind controlled workforce now nearly immortal, was pleased by the results of his profane experimentation. He was not concerned with the look of the beasts who did his bidding, simply that they could continue to do so for the decades he needed them to.

It is said that even after he left the Temple of Stone Dawn he took a collection of cuttings from the necrotic worms with him to establish new servants in his next endeavor. To this day strange folk stories bubble up from far flung rural communities about dragons of bone wrapped in squirming purple worms. Although none of these rumors have ever been confirmed, it stands to reason that such a thing could exist.

Creating an Undead Cultist of Kavagar

“Undead Cultist of Kavagar” is an acquired template that can be added to any non-good living creature with a mouth and digestive tract that includes internal organs (referred to hereafter as the base creature).

A Undead Cultist of Kavagar uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Challenge Rating: Same as base creature +2.

Alignment: Any non-good.

Type: The creature’s type changes to undead. Do not recalculate base attack bonuses, saves, or skill points.

Aura: An Undead Cultist of Kavagar gains the unnatural aura (30 ft.) ability.

Armor Class: Natural armor class by +5.

Hit Dice: Change all of the base creature’s racial HD to d12s.

Defensive Abilities: An Undead Cultist of Kavagar, in addition to normal undead traits, gains cold and fire resistance 8.

Speed: If the base creature has a fly speed because it possesses wings, its maneuverability is not reduced. A fly speed granted by supernatural means does not change.

Attacks: The Undead Cultist of Kavagar retains all the base creature’s attacks and its weapon and armor proficiencies. The Undead Cultist of Kavagar gains a primary tongue attack that only applies to of it's heads. For multiple headed creatures the tongue attack can switch mouths it is using as move action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. The damage for any attacks gained by the application of this template depends on the base creature’s size. Treat the tongue attack as a gore attack of a creature one size category larger.

Space/Reach: The Undead Cultist of Kavagar has a reach 5 feet greater than the base creature’s reach with its tongue attack.

Special Attacks: The Undead Cultist of Kavagar retains all the base creature’s special attacks, and gains paralysis (1d4+4 rounds) with each natural attack. Save VS paralysis 5+CHA of creature after template is applied.

Abilities: Str +12, Dex +10, Cha +6. As an undead creature, The Undead Cultist of Kavagar has no Constitution score.

Feats: The Undead Cultist of Kavagar gains Multi-attack as bonus feats.

Skills: The Undead Cultist of Kavagar has a +15 racial bonus on Climb, Perception, Stealth, and Swim checks.
